I’ll answer more questions after I rescue the Super Lazy Tree.
I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever had as much fun playing a platformer Mario game as now playing Super Mario 3D Land. Mixing the concepts of the 2D Mario with the gameplay of the 3D Mario was truly a genius idea, not because it’s fanservice, but because it works for the player!
My first impression of the game was rather lukewarm, but once I got used to the game, and then when it got more fast-paced later on, I had a source of daily intake of joy in my hands.
The controls, although just a little bit based on your mommentum, are very fluid and responsive. But it’s a Mario game of this day and age… I shouldn’t be having to tell you that. Anyways…
The level design is also very exceptional. I’ve never seen anything like it in all my video games I’ve played. The closest thing I’ve seen to it were the Action Stages in Super Mario Sunshine, but even then, it isn’t anything like it.
The game wants you to think that playing in 3D is almost imperative to your success, which I can assure you - that isn’t the case for me. I’ve been playing through almost the entire game in 2D Mode. Then again, I’ve played so many video games that I have more depth perception on a flat screen than I have in real life. Which sounds really sad, but whatever.
